President for united efforts to fight climate change
Staff Correspondent : President Abdul Hamid has urged global community for combined efforts in 
mitigating and combating the impacts of climate change. Climate change is a global phenomenon. A single country or a region would not be able to address this burning issue. Therefore, it needs concerted and united efforts from global community to mitigate and combat the impacts of climate change, he said.
The President was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the South Asia judicial conference on environment and climate change jointly organised by Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Asian Development Bank at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden Hotel in the city.
He said that the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has consistently endeavored to render meaningful justice to cases involving conservation and protection of environment by using tools of innovating and creative interpretation of constitutional provisions.
“The Bangladesh judiciary is highly sensitized about the importance and necessity of conservation of environment and accordingly playing an important and pro-active role in combating activities detrimental to ecological balance and conservation of environment,” President Abdul Hamid said.
President also highlighted initiatives taken by the Bangladesh government for addressing climate change risks adding “Bangladesh is one of the first countries that signed and ratified the Paris Agreement and also the first country to set up Climate Change Fund of US$ 400 million from its own resources.”
He also hoped that the suggestions and recommendations, which will be emanated from the conference, will help in taking pragmatic steps to protect and preserve the environment.
Law minister Anisul Huq, Appellate division judge of Supreme Court Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, Deputy Minister for Environment and Forest Abdullah Al Islam Jakob and General Counsel of ADB Christopher Stephens, addressed the session held with Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha in the chair.
