Obaidul Quader made AL GS as speculated

Staff Correspondent :   Ruling Bangladesh Awami League on Sunday kept Sheikh Hasina as its president and made the party’s presidium member Obaidul Quader its next general secretary, after much speculation and debate in the run up to the party council session.

Obaidul Quader, also road and bridges minister, was elected by the councillors on the second day of party’s two-day 20th conference at the Suhrawardy Udyan and Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.
Obaidul replaces the incumbent, public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam, who was made the party’s acting general secretary during the emergency period in 2007.

Later, the 18th council session of the party approved Syed Ashraful Islam’s appointment in 2009 and he was reassigned the post in the 19th council session in 2012.

Sheikh Hasina became the president of the party in 1981 and since then she remained at the helm of the party which led the country’s liberation war in 1971.
